Descriptions

Look at item descriptions - weights, if the item is plated, whether you receive any warranties etc. - the more detail the better and don't be afraid to ask if you want more information

Cheap Jewelry

The old cliche works - if it's too good to be true, it often is. Make sure you do your homework and review the item thoroughly. A genuine seller will be more than happy to answer any questions you have; conversely, a 'bad' seller may be hesitant/reluctant to answer your questions!

Paypal

Use Paypal always and make sure the auction has the 'your purchase is protected by paypal' stamp

Worst Case Scenarios!

Say the worst happens and it's a fake (don't worry this is very rare) then follow Paypal procedures and you'll be fine. If the seller does not cooperate, Paypal will force them to and have you covered.

Hallmarks (UK only)

An early form of quality control - look for hallmarks on items to prove the metal is as claimed. For Silver, Gold or Platinum jewelry look for the hallmarks and compare them to the Assay Office website records.
